Your footage is fine. Your audio is the problem.

Clients watch the edit and say the video feels cheap. Nine times out of ten, the picture is fine. It's the sound.

A client watched their new brand video and said it felt cheap. The footage was sharp. The lighting was fine. The edit moved. The problem was the audio. You could hear the room in every line, and the voice kept dipping under the air conditioner.

Your ears judge before your eyes do. People will watch shaky 1080p all day, but bad audio makes them click away in seconds. The brain reads muddy sound as unprofessional before it ever evaluates the picture. Every analytics report I've ever been shown has the same cliff: the drop-off is always where the audio gets rough.

Get the mic close. That is most of it.

Every foot of distance between the mic and the mouth doubles the room noise. The number one killer I see is the camera mic from ten feet away, picking up the HVAC, the hallway, the refrigerator hum. A twenty-five dollar lav clipped six inches from the collar beats a three-thousand dollar camera across the room. Distance is the whole game.

Set your levels like you mean it

Peaks around minus twelve dB. Never let it touch zero. If you're guessing, you're clipping, and clipped audio cannot be fixed in post no matter what anyone tells you. I run a phone voice memo as a backup on every interview. It has saved two shoots this year.

The room is an instrument

Hard floors, bare walls, big glass: that's an echo chamber. You don't need acoustic panels. I've done interviews in closets full of coats because the client needed it quiet. Soft stuff absorbs, hard stuff reflects. Pick the soft room, kill the AC for the take, and your twenty-five dollar mic will sound like a studio.

Next time a video feels off, close your eyes and just listen. Nine times out of ten, that's where the fix is. And it's the cheapest fix in production.
